We plan to approach Mahmoud Darwish’s legacy and phenomenon by creating a space that acts as a time machine of sorts. To understand the way we perceive Darwish, we feel it is necessary to look at his personality and body of work chronologically. The motivation and ideas of a young Darwish are defined differently than the ones of his later journey in life. We aim to take a closer look at his history, his beginnings, and the transition all the way to the end in Ramallah.

Through this timeline, we can understand the phenomenon around him in regards to what was the state of the Palestinian struggle at the time. The medium plays a key role in our sound project. By going back in time, we feel it is necessary to also use the same medium and equipment that was being used to transmit Darwish’s poetry. Whether it is cassette, vinyl, or even a piece of paper, we plan to use all of these mediums to create a work that would transmit in a similar fashion.

It has always been a big question: is it possible to separate the art from the artist? If all art is political, especially the art that specifically falls under the political genre, then how should the artist creating that art be viewed? If the artist is involved in questionable practices, what does this mean to us as audience, who are consumers of their art?
